The total amount is going to be 1.24x the price of the pizza slice.  The greatest whole number factor of 124 is 31, so the total must be a multiple of 31 cents.

 

3.00 ÷ 0.31 = 9.68

9 x .31 = 2.79

2.79 ÷ 1.24 = 2.25

 

The slice of pizza cost $2.25.
