 In a right triangle The longer leg is 3 meters longer than the shorter leg. The hypotenuse is 6 meters longer than the shorter leg. Find all sides.

let x = length of shorter leg

then longer leg = x+___

and hypotenuse = x+___

 

Now substitute these expressions into the formula " square of hypotenuse equals sum of squares of the legs"

 

You will be squaring binomials; (x+3)² will be x² + 6x + 9, of course.

you will ultimately have a quadratic equation which you are expected to be able to solve, either by factoring or by use of the quadratic formula.
