Vertical angles are congruent (equal in measure). Linear pairs of angles add to 180o.
If you think of the letter "X" as representing the intersection of two lines, then an example of vertical angles are the angles at 12 O'Clock and 6 O'Clock, while, for example, the angles at 3 O'Clock and 6 O'Clock form a linear pair.
