If i have 3x- 3x do i get x or does it cancel out

Or, if you wish, think of the variable as standing for a thing, such as "apples."

3apples - 3 apples = 0apples, or just plain 0 (zero).

It cancels out. The best way to see this is by factoring out the x giving you x(3-3) = x(0). Anything times zero is zero, so it cancels out.


Good thinking!  When you have something such as 0=14, it's a false statement, which means there is "no solution," or "null set," if you use that notation.
