The number of ions that are free in solution will determine its electrical conductivity. Thus, only electrolytes dissolved in solution will conduct a current. Non electrolytes will not.
Examples:
1 M glucose = non electrolyte = will not conduct.
1M NaCl = an electrolyte = 1 M Na+ ions and 1 M Cl- ions. Will conduct.
1M MgCl2 = an electrolyte = 1 M Mg2+ ions + 2M Cl- ions. Will conduct better than 1 M NaCl (more ions).
