Sarah took the advertising department for her company on a round trip to meet with a potential client. Including Sarah a total of 13 people took the trip. She was able to purchase coach tickets for $200and first class tickets for $1180. She used her total budget for airfare for the trip, which was $11,420. How many first class tickets did she buy? How many coach tickets did she buy

Since there are two unknowns, we need two equations.  Let c=#coach tickets and f=#first class tickets.

 

200c + 1180f = 11420

c + f = 13

 

c = 13 - f

200(13 - f) + 1180f = 11420

2600 - 200f + 1180f = 11420

2600 + 980f = 11420

980f = 8820

f = 9

c = 13 - 9

 

So she bought 9 first class tickets and 4 coach tickets.
