distance is a scalar quantity. it equals average speed x time.
displacement is a vector quantity. It has a magnitude as does distance but it also has a direction. So displacement is measured as the distance between the starting point and the end point. So if a person walks for hours but in the end is only 10 feet away from where they started because sometimes they were walking in one direction and other times in the opposite direction, then displacement is 10 feet even though the distance traveled is much greater.
