The median is the middle value of the data set, which is 4, so you want the mean to be 4 as well. The mean is computed by:
mean = (2+3+4+5+x)/5
4 = (14+x)/5
Solve for x.

The answer depends on where x fits value-wise in the sequence 2 3 4 5 x. I assumed because the other numbers were in increasing order that x was the largest value in the data set. In that case:
4 = (14+x)/5
20 = 14 + x
6 = x
The answer is 6 assuming that x is the largest number in the data set. If x is the smallest number in the data set:
x 2 3 4 5
Then the median is 3 and:
3 = (14+x)/5
15 = 14+x
1 = x
If x IS the median value, then:
x = (14+x)/5
5x = 14 + x
4x = 14
x = 3.5
So it depends on where x fits in the sequence which the problem did not specify. You could also try 2 x 3 4 5 and 2 3 4 x 5.
