No. This is NOT true, especially if you keep the exposure to a minimum.  One of the least harmful/dangerous radioactive nuclides is tritium, ³H.  People work with this in a research setting on a daily basis for many years with no ill effects.

Some radioactive things actually save lives. For example, many smoke detectors contain radioactive substances. How many lives do you think were saved by smoke detectors? How much property damage do you think was prevented by smoke detectors? Radioactive isotopes are also used in medicine, especially medical imaging. How many lives do you think were saved by early detection and treatment of serious medical conditions, facilitated by use of radioactive substances?

 

There certainly are hazardous radioactive substances, and even some extremely hazardous substances, such as those contained in expended fuel rods from nuclear reactors. But with proper precautions, even those can be handled safely.
