Step One: Assign a label to the unknown. What don't we know? The number of girls. Lets call that G.
Step Two: Find relationships using the information given in the problem. From reading the sentence we know that the total number of students (25) is equal to the sum of the boy students (16) and the girl students (G).
Step Three: Write down this relationship using math symbols including the variable you just defined:
25=16+G
Step Four: Solve the equation for the unknown
25-16=G
9=G
As far as "what equation to write", I would show your work in the progression I stated above. Any of the three statements we wrote down show the same relationship and are valid equations.
