A simpler explanation would be all angles inside a square are equal to 90°. If you have a shape that has 4 equal sides, but only opposite angles are equal, it's a diamond. A diamond is a type of parallelogram.

asked 01/29/13A square has 4 equals and 4 equal corners. Some diamonds have the same characteristics. And this seems to be confusing.

In a square the length of each side is not the only thing that is equal. Everything must be equal for it to be a square, including the distance from one opposing corner to the other. Distance across is the same up and down and distance to one set of adjacent corners needs to be the same as it is to the other set.
In a diamond shape when all sides are the same length the major difference is still the distance to each set of adjacent corners. When factoring area and perimeter the formulas are the same.

Thanks a lot Laura and Jeff. So can I say that a diamond is to a square what a parallelogram is to a rectangle? Sorry for the style, I'm just a linguist! But I love math. Unfortunately, it seems too hard to me. Again, thanks a lot for your clarification!
