Specification of the total amount was not done correctly.
I shall assume that total is fourteen and two-fifth lbs.
One can divide that equally amongst six people by dividing, as follows:
14.4 ÷ 6.
There are methods for doing this on paper (long division).
The use of a calculator seems permissible, to me.
There are also methods for doing this in the form of an improper fraction multiplied by one sixth. This is the least desirable, to me, but perhaps Division by Fractions is the current topic in your class. For that, I offer the following hint.
14.4 divided by 6 is one tenth of 144 divided by 6, and since 144 is 122 I will get
one tenth of 12 times 2 which is one fifth of 12 which is 2.4 or two and two fifths lbs each.
