Hi Necoe from Augusta, GA...hope you had a great day at school.
I am going to help you with understanding how to do these kind of problems. You set up a ratio, which means comparing a set of values to another set of numbers.
This is how it goes:
known value of item equal to below = unknown value
known value of item equal to above what is known of value above
Here are some examples: there are 8 ounces in one cup
a problem might ask 'how many ounces in 3 cups.
Let's set up the problem:
We know that:
8 ounces is the same as 1 cup so we can write
8 ounces but we need to find out how many ounces in 3 cups
1 cup
so we can write:
8 ounces = ? ounces
1 cup 3 cups
To solve we cross multiply:
(8 ounces)(3 cups) = (1 cup)(? ounces) get ounces to one side
(8 ounces)(3 cups) = (1 cup)(? ounces) by dividing both sides by cups
1 cup 1 cup
(8 ounces)(3 cups) = (1 cup)(? ounces) cancel cups one each side
1 cup 1 cup
Complete the operation (8 ounces)(3) = (? ounces)
Which equals 24 ounces = ? ounces
That is our answer:
I will help you with the first answer, then you will be able to do the rest like a pro. 56 pints(pts) = ? quarts(qt)
there are 2 pints in 1 quart, so your equation will look like:
2 pt = 56 pints
1 qt ? qt
Cross multiply: (2pt)(?qt) = (1 qt)(56 pt)
(2pt)(?qt) = (1 qt)(56 pt)
2 pt 2 pt
Complete the operation and it will give you how many quarts make up 56 pints.
I gave you how many ounces in a cup. There are 4 quarts in a gallon. Follow the example and you will be a pro. It will be too easy to do your problem. When you learn, you'll feel like a champ
