5 less...this means we're going to subtract 5 from something:   ? - 5

the product of 9 and y:     9 times y    or     9y

is 40:   all the parts are going to equal 40

so...    5 less           than the product of 9 and y             is 40

          ? -  5                        9y                                     =  40    

re-writing it is;          9y  -  5   =  40

the product of 9  and y less than 5 is 40

Using this equation and the operations of Algebra, solve for y.

            so after your Algebra operations     y = ?
