Here's the derivation of the formulas I gave her:

  slope M = (Y - My)/(X - Mx) where (X,Y) is the unknown endpoint and (Mx,My) is the midpoint.

  Then Y = M(X - Mx) + My  <---- equation #1

Let D be the distance from the given endpoint to the midpoint.
Then D^2 = (X  - Mx)^2 + (Y  - My)^2

       D^2  = ( X - Mx)^2 + (  M(X-Mx)+My - My )^2 <---- substitutes 1st equation

               = (X - Mx)^2 + (  M(X - Mx))^2   <--- My conveniently cancels

               = (X- Mx)^2 + M^2 ( X-Mx)^2  <--- property of exponents

               = (M^2 + 1) (X - Mx)^2 <--- combines like terms of (X - Mx)^2

Solving for X:

 D^2/(M^2 + 1) = (X - Mx)^2

  +or- D / sqrt(M^2 + 1) = X - Mx  <--- square root of both sides; something may have been negative so +or-

X = Mx _or- D/sqrt(M^2 + 1)

Mark M.

Why complicate with the distance formula when the difference between the coordinates suffice?

Thank you Mark.  I agree wholeheartedly.
This problem is much simpler than that.
Still, good looking out on Andy.
