On a trip the Fare for each adult was 50cents and for each child 25 cents. If 30 passengers paid $12.25, how many adults and children went?

Let a = the number of adults on the trip

Let c = the number of children on the trip

a + c = 30      c = 30 - a

.50a + .25c = 12.25        Multiply both sides of this equation by 100.

50a + 25c = 1225

50a + 25(30-a) = 1225

50a + 750 - 25a = 1225

25a = 475

a = 19 adults

c = 30 - a = 30 - 19

c = 11 children
