In a motorboat, it takes 3 hours to go downstream with the current of 6kph and upstream takes 5 hours. What are the upstream and downstream speeds?

Say motor speed = x kph

 

Downstream speed = (x+6) kph

 

Upstream speed = (x-6) kph

 

3*(x+6) = 5*(x-6)

3x +18=5x-30

 

2x= 48

 

x= 24

 

SO  Downstream speed  = 30KPH

 

       Upstream speed =  18kph
