If you name x as your variable, you would set the problem up as
1/3x + x =16
When you add your x's, you get
1 1/3x = 16 or 4/3x = 16
You would multiply both sides by the reciprocal (3/4)
3/4 * 4/3x = 16 * 3/4
This would give you
x = 12
1/3 of 12 is 4
4 + 12 = 16
