I don't know how to write the equations because i cant figure out what am i supposed to take from this word problem to GET the equations

 

the question; 

 The cost of 1 kg of tomatoes is $x and the cost of 1 kg of onions is $y.

 Ian pays a total of $10.70 for 10 kg of tomatoes and 4 kg of onions.

 Jao pays a total of $10.10 for 8 kg of tomatoes and 6 kg of onions.

 [  Write down simultaneous equations and solve them to find x and y ]

Your equations are:

10x + 4y = 10.70  

(Since each kg of tomatoes costs $x, 10kg of tomatoes costs $10x and each kg of onions costs $y, 4 kg of onions costs $y; the problem says that they need to add up to $10.70)

 

Using similar logic for Jao's purchase:

8x + 6y = $10.10
