Did you plug in your USB disk into a computer that did not have virus protection when they got deleted? Usually, viruses target files that are saved in USB disks file folders.
An indication of this happening to you is going to your computers disk drive and look for your USB disk's name. If the icon looks like a folder, then you may have a virus. Scan for virus on your USB drive. Otherwise, if the icon looks like a hardware, you are ok.
I would research online for a program that will allow you to retrieve those files for free. But I would guarantee you will be able to open the files once successfully retrieved.
