A bag contains cards labeled with numbers. There are three 5s, one 4, two 3s and two 2s. One card is randomly selected, noted, then replaced. Then another card is selected. What is the probability that the first card and the second card drawn are both even?

There are 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 8 total cards in the bag.  Of those 8 cards, 3 are even.  So the probability of selecting an even card on a single draw is:

 

P(even) = 3/8

 

If you put the card back into the bag, there are still 8 cards in the bag, three of which are even.  So the probability of picking an even card remains 3/8.  The probability of picking two even cards then is:

 

P(even, even) = 3/8 * 3/8 = 9/64
