1/2x +y=32

16x+16y=16

x/2 + y = 32

16x + 16y = 16

 

Simplify the bottom equation by dividing by 16 on both sides and get x + y = 1.  Then y = 1 -x, which you substitute into the top equation to get

 

x/2 + (1 - x) = 32

 

Solve for x.

 

-x/2 = 31

 

x = -62

 

y = 1 - x = 1 - (-62) = 63

 

y = 63
