Could someone explain how to solve the following? 

 

Perform the following: 

a) What percent of 234 is 14? 

b) 34 is 8% of what number?

Answer 1

Lily, percent = is/of x 100.

 

For example, what percent of 72 is 4?

 

4/72 x 100 = 6%

Answer 2

a) What percent of 234 is 14?  This translates into the equation (x/100)(234) = 14.

 

b) 34 is 8% of what number?  This translates into the equation 34 = 0.8x, where x is'what number'.
