120/6 = 20

the three is in the denominator:

40/18 = 20/9

(1/2 + 3/8) * 24 = (14/16)*24 = (14 *24)/16 = (14*3)/2 = 42/2 = 21

or (14*24)/(2*8) <--- 14 cancels 2 and 24 cancels 8

7*3 = 21
