The perimeter of a triangle is 62 in. the longest side is 15 in. longer than the medium side, and the medium side is 4 in. more than the shortest side. find the length of each side of the triangle.

Perimeter = short side + medium side + long side

 62  = s + m + l

l = m + 15

m = s + 4  or in terms of s    s = m - 4

 

All of this is in the problem

By substitution we have 62 = m - 4 + m + m + 15

                                  62 = 3m + 11

                                  51 = 3m

                                  m = 3  so the medium side is 3.

Use the equation at the top to get the remaining sides by plugging in 3 for m.
