Simple Math???

Question

If there is a rectangle, and the height is 19.2, what is the width? Let me explain the model. So, in the rectangle, there is a slant line from the top left corner down to the bottom right corner, labeled as 53 inches. With these two numbers, 19.2 and 53, how do I find the width of the rectangle?

x = width of the rectangle

From Pythagorean Theorem:

 

x² + 19.2² = 53²

 

x = √(53² - 19.2²)

        The slanted line forms the hypotenuse of a right triangle and is 53" long the height is 19.2" the width is the other leg of the triangle. Do you recall the  Pythagorean theorem? You v=can use it to solve fro the width.

Draw the figure!  You have a rectangle with one DIAGONAL.  The diagonal forms two congruent right triangles.

 

You know the hypotenuse measurement, 53", and you know one leg(height) = 19.2"

 

You may use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve for the other leg of the triangle (the base length).
