C = number of children tickets at $1.50 each

 

The given information can be summarized with the following 2 equations:

 

(i)   A + C = 300  [sold a total of 300 tickets]

(ii)  650.00 = (2.50)A + (1.50)C  [sold $650.00 total in tickets]

 

From (i), get A = 300 - C, and substitute for A in (ii).  You will be left with an equation in C.  Solve it and get C, then substitute your result for C into (i) to get A.

Hi Tina. Do you know about systems of equations?

 

Here a + c = 300 (meaning adult plus children's tix total 300 tix),

 

and 250 a + 150c = 65000 (i like dealing in cents because no worries about decimal points). This equation means that some number of adult tix at 250 cents each, plus some number of kids tix, at 150 cents each, will equal 65,000 cents.

 

Can you solve by elimination or substitution? (Subst is probably the better choice...)

Total= $650  

a + c = 300                      substitute into second equation       

2.50 a + 1.50 c = 650

2.50 a + 1.50 (300 - a) = 650      distribute and combine like terms

2.50 a - 1.50 a = 650 - 450 

a = 200

c= 300 - a     c= 100
