What continues to elude researchers is a cure for cancer in advanced stage. How do cancer tumor cells develop resistance to once effective drugs? Under drug treatment, what causes tumor cells to survive and what are these processes? How do effective drugs eliminate tumor cells? What is the rate at which tumor cells exposed to an effective drug are destroyed, as opposed to tumor cells that survive under the same treatment? The technology does not exist for these phenomena to be observed in real time. Another question is how a patient's tumor can provide information on its potential to be lethal, or conversely, to lead to long-term stable remission.
