Two boats leave the same dock at the same time, one traveling due west at 8 miles per hour and the other due north at 15 miles per hour. How many miles apart are the boats after three hours?

So after 3 hrs the first boat is 24 miles west and the second boat is 45 miles north (you are given speed so multiply by 3)

What you have is a right triangle with 1 side = 24 and the other = 45.

To get distance between two boats use pythagorean theorem with a = 24 and b = 45 and you will get c the distance between boats
