Tringle problem

How many triangles of perimeter 13 inches are there if the length of each side must be a whole number?

so with that being said do I just find numbers that add up to the number 13? Im confused how you got those for an answer..

Yes, "perimeter 13 inches" means (length of side 1) + (length of side 2) + (length of side 3) because the perimeter is the total distance around the triangle.
 
Now, two rules must be followed:
  A.  To be a triangle, the sum of the lengths of any two sides must be more than the length of the third side.
  B.  The perimeter of this triangle is 13.
 
Start with a side of length 1.  Now, what two numbers add up to 12 but keep rule A true?
Then, start with a side of length 2 and do the same.
Soon, you sill have to stop because the numbers get too big for rule B to be true.
