Cheerleader tryouts for math.

Question

There are 62 Time slots for cheerleading tryouts on Saturday and sunday. Then are 14 more slots on Saturday than on Sunday. Find the number of Saturday time slots x and the number of Sunday time slots y.

Equation 1:

x+y=62

(all of the time slots are either on Saturday which is x or Sunday which is y)

Equation 2:

x=y+14

(There are 14 more Saturday than Sunday slots so whatever Sunday is which is y plus 14)

 

Now plug Equation 2 into Equation 1.

 

(x)+(y)=62....--> (y+14)+(y)=62

2y+14=62 now subtract 14 from each side

2y=48 now divide each side by 2

y=24.

Now plug in our y to the first equation.

 

x+y=62...---> x+24=62 now subtract 24 from each side

x=38.

 

You can now test the values

 

x+y=62

38+24=62 and there are 14 more time slots for Saturday than Sunday.
