Your friend Zoey has a height with a z-score of -1.51. Will she qualify to work at the fire department. If the Standard dev. is 3.1 and Mean is 5ft 4 inches.

Does the question provide any more context about what the height requirement is for the fire department?

You can use her Z score in order to find what her height is

Z = (x – mean) / standard deviation

-1.51 = (x – 64) / 3.1

x = 3.1(-1.51) + 64

x = 59.32 inches

That would be about 4 feet 11.3 inches, but we need to know more information about what the cut off value is in order to make a determination about her eligibility.

        I think you have something missing here….with the information given we can calculate Zoey's height

 

z=(h-μ)/σ where h=Zoey's height, μ=mean of the population and σ= standard deviation.

So we have -1.51=(h-64)/3.1 so h=59.35" or 4ft 11 inches. What we don't know is what is the minimum hight allowed.
