A video game system and several games are sold for $700. The cost of the games is  3 times as much  as the cost of the system. Find the cost of the system and the cost of the games.

Let v be the cost of the system.

 

Then 3v would be the cost of the games.

 

Add them together (to get their total cost as an algebraic expression) and set it equal to the provided total cost.

 

v + 3v = 700
