Karim sold a house at RM288 400 for his friend. The price included the 3% commission for Karim. What was the selling price of the house without the commission?

If "X" is the selling price without commission and "sp" is the selling price with commission;

 

sp = X + .03X

sp = X(1 + .03)

 

SP/(1+.03) = x

Looking at the algebraic logic this can be set up as thus:

Let C = commission

 

P + C = 288,400

C = .03P

 

Replace C in 1st equation with .03P

 

P + .03P = 288,400

1.03P = 288,400

P = 288,400/1.03

P = 280,000
