 Joey has nickels and dimes in his pocket. The number of dimes is 4 times the number of nickels. If Joey has 10 nickels, what is the total value of the money he has in his pocket?

N = number of nickels at $0.05 each

D = number of dimes at $0.10 each

 

N = 10 (given)

D = 4N = 4*10 = 40 (given)

 

T = total amount of money

 

T = N*($.05) + D*($0.10) = 10*($.05) + 40*($0.10)

 

T = $0.50 + $4.00 = $4.50
