The different wholes are the denominators. One fraction has a whole of 4, while the other has a whole of 6. Each of these wholes have a piece or several pieces taken out of them. We call that the numerator. If the numerator and denominator are the same in a single fraction, then you have a complete whole.
To find 1/4 of 5/6, simply multiply 1/4 by 5/6.
1/4 x 5/6 = 5/24
