We need to use the Distributive Property to clear the parentheses. It says that:
a(b + c) = (a* b) + (a * c) = ab + ac
So we have,
7 - 2(2x - 6) = 2 + 3(-x + 5)
7 - 4x + 12 = 2 - 3x + 15
We now need to combine like terms
19 - 4x = 17 - 3x
Now we need to get all of the x-terms on one side. Let's add 3x to both sides. We get:
19 - 4x + 3x = 17 - 3x + 3x The 3x terms will now be removed from the right side leaving:
19 - x = 17 Subtract 19 from both sides to get:
19 - 19 - x = 17 - 19
0 - x = -2
-x = - 2 Divide both sides by -1.
x = 2 is the solution.
