Find the coordinates of the other endpoint of the segment, if one endpoint is (-1,2) and its midpoint is (4,-7)

Hi, Iman. Let's call the other endpoint (x, y). Then we know from the Midpoint Formula that:

 

[x + (-1)]/2 = 4

1/2 x - 1/2 = 4

x - 1 = 8 (if we multiply thru by 2)

x = 9

 

Similarly, [y +2]/2 = -7

1/2 y + 1 = -7

y + 2 = -14

y = -16

 

The other endpoint is (9, -16)

     (x - 1)/2 = 4

 

           x - 1 = 8

 

                 x = 9

 

    (y + 2)/2 = -7
