-3x + 4y =76x + 5y =57

i have no idea what im doing. i missed a day and now my teacher wont tell me how to do this

Kenneth G.

When I solved this problem I assumed that the student stated the problem correctly, that is,  -3x+4y=76x+5y=57.   Since then several tutors have submitted answers presuming what they presume the student wanted the problem to be.

So, let's assume that the student did not state the problem correctly.  The student could have intended then
-3x +4y = 7 and 6x+5y =57 (noone suggested this), or -3x+4y=76 and x+5y=57, or perhaps even -3x+4y=77x+5 and y=57.

My point is, it's presumptuous and insulting to assume that the student stated the problem incorrectly.  Do you think the student is stupid?  I think it's the responsibility of tutors to give the student the benefit of the doubt as long as the stated problem makes sense.  I think tutors should have more respect for students than to presume they are stupid.

Kenneth;
We were all at one time students, struggling to copy something effectively from the board, and then to our tutors.  Even today, I do not always copy something correctly.  This is why I appreciate the copy-and-paste option on the computer.  But even using this, sometimes I accidentally omit a digit or a negative sign.  If our presumptions are calling the student "stupid", then we are all stupid.

Vivian,

If the student made a mistake he/she can resubmit the correct problem.  It's not our job to second-guess the student.

Kenneth,

You don't have to do it if you don't think it is your job. Let others do what they think they should do.
