Usually Sharon rides her bicycle 5 4/5 miles a day. Today she rode half her usual distance. How far did she ride?

Multiply 5 4/5 times 1/2

 

= (5 4/5) (1/2)

 

= (29/5) (1/2)

 

= 29/10

 

= 2 9/10 miles

Change 5 4/5 miles to an improper fraction: 5 x 5 + 4 = 29, so 5 4/5 = 29 / 5. Now multiply that fraction by 1/2:

(29 / 5) X (1 / 2) = 29 / 10, or 2 9/10. Alternatively, you could convert to decimals. Thus, 5 4/5 is same as 5.8.

Then 5.8 x 1/2 or 5.8 / 2 = 2.9, or 2 9/10.
