AS of 2002 8/14 of the US presidents were born in either Virginia or Ohio and 1/6 were born in either Massachusetts or New York. What fraction were born in one of these four states

To determine this, we need to add the two fractions.

 

8/14 + 1/6 Our common denominator will be 42 because 14 * 3 = 42, and 6 * 7 = 42

 

We can re-write the problem now as:

 

(8 * 3)/42 + (1 * 7)/42

 

= 24/42 + 7/42 = (24 + 7)/42 = 31/42
