A local animal shelter rescues dogs and cats. Last year, they rescued a total of 480 cats and 320 dogs. If the relationship between the cats and the dogs remained proportional all year, how many dogs were rescued after the shelter saved 30 cats?

The proportion of rescued dogs over rescued cats is:   320 dogs/480 cats  (Last year)

 

Because this proportion is kept constant all year, we have that the rescued X dogs after the shelter saved 30 cats is:

 

X dogs/ 30 cats  =  320 dogs/ 480 cats

 

Solving for X:     X dogs = (320 dogs/480 cats)* 30 cats

 

                         X = 20 dogs

 

Solution: A total of 20 dogs were rescued.
