In the toy bin there are a total of 248 vehicles. If there are three times as many trains as cars, how many trains are there?

Let C = number of cars (C is the variable)
There are three times as many trains as cars, so number of trains = 3*C
Total of 248 vehicles, so
C + 3*C = 248 (this is the equation to solve)
4*C = 248
C = 62 (this is the number of cars)
So the number of trains is 3*C = 3*62 = 186
You can check your answer by adding 62 cars + 186 trains to get 248 total vehicles.
