12x2 + x -1 =0
Factor the expression
( 3x + 1 ) ( 4x - 1) = 0
Set both expressions equal to zero
3x + 1 = 0 and 4x - 1 = 0
x = -1/3 x = 1/4

This can also be solved by factoring the left side of equation using FOIL.
(4x - 1)(3x + 1) = 0
Now just set the factors equal to zero. Can you continue from here?

FACTORING is the best thing to try, first. Only if not factorable should one use the quadratic formula (as a general 'rule of thumb.')
A small observation: Factoring is the inverse operation of FOIL.
The terms are not interchangeable.
