Solve the quadratic equation 12x(squared)+x-1=0

Solve the quadric equation and solve for both expressions

Jason L.

[ -b -/+ sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) ] / 2a
[ -1 -/+ sqrt(1^2 - 4(12)(-1) ]  / 2(12)
-1 -/+ sqrt(1+48) / 24
-1 -/+sqrt(49)/24
(-1 -/+ 7)/24

(-1 - 7)/24 = -1/3
(-1 + 7)/24 = 1/4

Some students prefer a full explanation, not just a beginning statement!

I always give full explanations.  Just not to the point where I give them the complete and final answer, preventing them from thinking for themselves.

FACTORING is the best thing to try, first. Only if not factorable should one use the quadratic formula (as a general 'rule of thumb.')

A small observation: Factoring is the inverse operation of FOIL. The terms are not interchangeable.
