Substitute the second equation into the first:

 

3x + 2y = 8

3x + 2(3 - 2x) = 8

3x + 6 - 4x = 8

6 - x = 8

x = 6 - 8 = -2

 

y = 3 - 2x = 3 - (-4) = 3 + 4 = 7

Substitute y in equation (2) into equation (1):    3x + 2y = 8

                                                                     3x +(3 -2x) = 8

                                                                     3x + 3 -2x = 8

                                                                       x  + 3  = 8           x = 5

 

Use equation (2) to get y value:    y = 3 - 2(5) = 3 -10      y = -7
