A bakery sells 10 ounce bags of nuts for $3.26 per bag. They sell 8 ounce bags of mints for $4.10 per bag.  They receive a check for $88.48 for an order of 22 items. How many items did they sell?

Define your variables. Set up a system of equations. Solve the system of equations.

Jason L.

Let E = # 8 oz bags, T = # 10 oz bags

3.26t + 4.10e = 88.48
t + e = 22

Isolate and substitute.

t = 22-e

3.26(22-e) + 4.1e = 88.48
71.72 - 3.26e + 4.1e = 88.48
16.76 = .84e
e = 19.95

Which means t would equal 2.  However, if we plug that back into the first function then we would get a total of $88.52.  So that means we need to sell 1 less e and 1 more t.  So the answer is e=19 and t=3.
