Absolute value when expressing in terms of simple logs

log5 [ (a2b)/(25) ] . Its log base 5.

My question is when there is an even number you have to write it with the absolute value sign right?

Hi Alan, yes it is expanding. Im not sure why the exercise in my book says to put it in simple terms.

My original question i asked was because I remember my teacher saying something about absolute value when the exponent is an even number and that my final answer should have the absolute value bars. I forgot exactly what he said so I thought Id get clarification here.

Alex,

Just remember that you cannot find a logarithm of any number which is NOT positive. Your teacher may have been referring to another type of problem, but I cannot be sure without knowing exactly what wa said in your class.

√a2 = |a|, while 3√a3 = a, for a any real number is what I was thinking. This has nothing to do with logarithms, though.
