How to simplify?

How do you simplify .....   -√200  

 

I could not find the correct symbol for the 200 but that is the closes I could get with the check. as the square root sign

-√200 = -√[(100)(2)] = - (±10√2) = ±10√2

My explanation may be a little "hokey," yet I hope it helps.

The radical ( √ ) is a cage that has a special door/escape. The only numbers that may get out are perfect squares - 1, 4, 9, 14, 25, 36, .....

This is why Michael J. rewrote the expression as √(100 · 2), 100 is a perfect square. 

And when the number get out, they must "un-square."  √4 = √2² = 2

So for √100, √(100·2), √(10²·2), 10√2
