A punnet square is an idea generated by geneticists which has been used to describe how many different ways x amount of items can be combined with y amount of items

in genetics we see
   x    y
x xx  xy
x xx  xy

in mathematics we can use it to foil
     2x       3
2x  4x^2   6x

3   6x        9

so short and simple a punnet square is an idea that is used to generate all the possibilities of x and y combined.
