If A=(10,4) and B=(2,19), what is the length of AB

I dont really understand the concept

Nice solution.  The student did not understand the concept, so you took the time to explain the process.  The student should also note that when taking the square-root on both sides of the Pythagorean theorem, the distance formula is obtained.
 
c represents the distance between the two main points, or hypotenuse of the right triangle.
 
a or b (depending how you orientated it) represents the distance between the x-coordinates and distance between the y-coordinates of the two main points.  The distance between the x-coordinates represents the length of the triangle's horizontal leg.  The distance between the y-coordinates represents the length of the triangle's vertical leg.
